New Delhi– The Government of India has issued a Media Advisory on Military Operations, directing all television channels, radio broadcasters, and social media platforms to refrain from broadcasting live visuals or real-time updates concerning the movements or activities of the armed forces.
In a detailed statement released by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), media outlets were reminded that premature or live reporting of military operations could compromise strategic initiatives and potentially aid hostile elements. The advisory emphasized that the disclosure of real-time images, videos, or source-based information relating to ongoing operations must be strictly avoided in the interest of national security.
The advisory, issued earlier this week, applies nationwide and is mandatory for all forms of media, including digital and social platforms. The ministry stressed that any violation could attract action under the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021. Rule 6(p) specifically prohibits the live telecast of anti-terror operations or any movements by security forces unless briefed and approved by a government-designated authority after the completion of the operation.
Highlighting past incidents such as the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the government underlined how responsible media coverage had played a pivotal role in protecting operational effectiveness. The new Media Advisory on Military Operations is intended to ensure that sensitive information is not inadvertently leaked, thereby maintaining the integrity and success of military missions.
“It is advised that media entities exercise utmost caution while covering defense-related activities and comply strictly with existing laws and regulations,” the statement added. The ministry further cautioned that early communication of operational details could unintentionally strengthen adversary tactics and undermine ongoing missions.
The Media Advisory on Military Operations marks a significant step towards enforcing responsible journalism practices in the context of national security. It reiterates the importance of relying only on official government briefings during sensitive operations, thereby avoiding speculative or unauthorized reporting that could endanger lives and missions.
