On 27 February 2026, the Indian Air Force conducted Exercise Vayu Shakti 2026 — a large-scale, live firepower demonstration at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The event showcased the air force’s operational readiness, precision strike capability and integration across platforms in simulated combat scenarios designed to reflect modern war-fighting conditions.
A Distinguished Audience and Historic Moments
The exercise was witnessed by President Smt Droupadi Murmu, in her role as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, underscoring the national importance of the demonstration. Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, senior military commanders and state leadership were also present.
In a first-ever milestone tied to the exercise, President Murmu undertook a sortie in the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter Prachand, flying alongside IAF pilots over airspace near Jaisalmer before observing the full firepower demonstration — a symbolic endorsement of India’s defence capabilities.

What Took Place at the Firepower Demonstration
Exercise Vayu Shakti 2026 followed a structured operational storyline that simulates a live, integrated combat theatre — reflecting coordinated offensive, defensive and joint operations.
The demonstration brought together more than 130 aircraft, including multirole fighters such as the Rafale, Sukhoi-30MKI, Mirage 2000, MiG-29, Jaguar and Hawk jets, tasked with precision strikes on simulated enemy targets using air-to-ground guided weapons.
Helicopters such as Mi-17s, Apache attack helicopters and Chinooks conducted low-altitude rocket and gun firing drills, casualty evacuation tasks and transport of equipment in tactical scenarios. Transport aircraft like C-130J, C-295 and C-17reinforced rapid deployment and logistical support capability.
Advanced air defence systems were also featured — including surface-to-air missiles and counter-drone technologies — underlining integrated protective cover and joint ground-air defence operations.

Precision in Day and Night Operations
The exercise uniquely demonstrated combat proficiency across day, dusk and night phases, validating the IAF’s round-the-clock operational capability. During night operations, precision strikes and tactical engagements showcased how fighter and support platforms coordinate under limited visibility conditions.
Simulated enemy assets — including runways, bunkers, radar sites and communication nodes — were engaged in coordinated strike packages, reflecting the force’s capacity to conduct multi-domain operations from the outset of conflict.
Integration and Multi-Domain Warfare
One of the unique aspects of Exercise Vayu Shakti 2026 was its emphasis on integration not only within the air arm but across defence domains. Special operations inserts by Garud and Para Special Forces were demonstrated, coupled with helicopter airdrops and casualty evacuation efforts to simulate joint force responsiveness.
Air defence operations were integrated with Army assets such as the Akash and SpyDer missile systems and anti-aircraft guns — testing interoperability in layered defence scenarios.
Strategic and National Significance
Beyond validating operational readiness, Exercise Vayu Shakti 2026 also carried strategic signalling value. By demonstrating the IAF’s ability to execute integrated combat operations involving diverse platforms and conditions, the exercise reaffirms India’s air power as a key pillar of deterrence and national security architecture. The scale of participation and the complexity of missions underscore the Indian Air Force’s evolution into a multi-domain force capable of responding decisively across the full spectrum of modern conflict environments.
Strengthening Indigenous Defence Capabilities
The event also highlighted indigenous platforms such as the Prachand LCH and other home-grown technologies — key outcomes of India’s push toward self-reliant defence production. President Murmu’s helicopter sortie marked a powerful symbolic moment in this journey.
By blending precision strike, air defence, logistics support and special operations in a single exercise, Exercise Vayu Shakti 2026 reaffirmed the Indian Air Force’s preparedness to safeguard sovereignty, protect national interests and maintain superiority in an evolving security landscape.
