In a concerning development, health authorities have confirmed the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in Mumbai, marking the first reported case in the city and bringing India’s total to eight. On January 1, 2025, doctors diagnosed a six-month-old infant with the respiratory virus.This case comes just days after the nation’s health authorities began to track the spread of HMPV, which has seen sporadic occurrences in other parts of the country. The girl was admitted to a hospital with severe symptoms, including a persistent cough, chest tightness, and dangerously low oxygen levels. Fortunately, after five days of treatment, she was discharged and is now recovering.

This HMPV outbreak in Mumbai is part of a larger pattern of rising cases across India, with earlier reports indicating infections in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.
