Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence of the United States, addressed concerns regarding former President Donald Trump’s tariff threat to India. During her official visit to New Delhi, she emphasized that India and the U.S. have established a direct dialogue at the highest levels to resolve the issue amicably.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Observer Research Foundation’s Raisina Dialogue, Gabbard highlighted the potential for strengthening the India-US economic relationship. “In my conversations with Indian government officials over the past few days, I’ve observed a strong willingness to view this matter positively rather than focusing solely on tariffs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is prioritizing India’s economic interests and opportunities for its citizens, while President Trump is doing the same for the American people,” she stated.
Gabbard underscored the commitment of both leaders to finding a mutually beneficial solution. “We are fortunate to have two leaders with practical approaches who are actively seeking constructive resolutions. This direct dialogue at the highest levels, along with engagement among key cabinet members and secretaries, will be crucial in charting the path forward. Additionally, I see a strong interest from the private sectors in both countries,” she added.
Reflecting on her guiding principles, Gabbard shared that she draws strength from the teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita. “During times of personal and professional challenges, whether in war zones or policy negotiations, I turn to Lord Krishna’s wisdom as a source of clarity and strength,” she remarked.
As part of her diplomatic engagements, Gabbard held wide-ranging discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, focusing on enhancing bilateral strategic ties, particularly in defense and intelligence sharing. Singh expressed optimism about strengthening the India-US partnership, stating, “Our discussions covered key areas, including defense cooperation and intelligence sharing, with the goal of deepening our strategic collaboration.”
During her visit, Gabbard also met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, where they deliberated on various facets of the India-US relationship.
