India is witnessing a steady increase in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, with 16 reported so far. The respiratory virus, known to cause symptoms like the common cold and COVID-19, has sparked concern among health authorities, especially for its impact on children.
On Saturday, Assam reported its first case, a 10-month-old baby currently being treated at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh. The baby, admitted with flu-like symptoms, is now in stable condition. Puducherry also reported an HMPV case in a three-year-old child who has since recovered.

States Step Up Vigilance
Gujarat leads with 4 HMPV cases, followed by Maharashtra with 3, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu with 2 each, and one case each in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, and West Bengal. In response, states like Punjab and Gujarat are implementing safety measures. Masks are being advised for children and the elderly, while isolation wards are being prepared in hospitals.

Children Under 2 Years Most Vulnerable
HMPV primarily affects children under 2 years of age. It causes cold-like symptoms and respiratory issues, making small children particularly vulnerable. The central government has directed states to increase surveillance for ILI and SARI cases and raise awareness about HMPV.

Flu Infections During Winter Not Unusual
The government assures that HMPV infections are common in winter and is monitoring the situation closely. ICMR and IDSP are tracking influenza cases, and preliminary data shows no unusual surge. Additional labs are being set up to ensure robust monitoring of HMPV cases year-round.
