GST Collection Hits Historic High in April, Signals Robust Economic Activity

New Delhi: India recorded a record GST collection in India in April 2025, touching a historic high of ₹2.37 lakh crore, marking a robust 12.6% year-on-year growth, as per data released by the finance ministry. This milestone in indirect tax collection indicates stronger domestic consumption and efficient compliance.

The April 2025 figures surpassed the previous high of ₹2.10 lakh crore registered in April 2024, reaffirming the increasing buoyancy in GST revenue since the rollout of the tax regime in July 2017. In comparison, GST collections in March 2025 stood at ₹1.96 lakh crore, showing a 9.9% rise year-on-year.

A detailed breakdown of the data reveals that revenue from domestic transactions grew by 10.7%, amounting to approximately ₹1.9 lakh crore. Meanwhile, GST from imported goods jumped by a significant 20.8%, reaching ₹46,913 crore.

Adding to the momentum, GST refunds issued in April rose sharply by 48.3% to ₹27,341 crore — suggesting a stronger compliance environment and faster processing by the tax authorities.

The continued upward trend in GST revenue has been evident for months. February 2025 collections climbed to ₹1.83 lakh crore, up 9.1%, supported by a double-digit surge in domestic contributions. January 2025 saw collections of ₹1.96 lakh crore, registering a 12.3% increase over the same month in 2024.

December 2024, however, reflected some seasonal moderation with collections of ₹1.77 lakh crore, reflecting a 7.3% growth — slightly lower than November’s 8.5%, a dip attributed to post-festive season consumption decline.

In the Union Budget 2025-26, the government has set a target of ₹11.78 lakh crore in GST revenues for the fiscal year, projecting an 11% year-on-year growth, including Central GST and compensation cess.

The record GST collection in India not only indicates healthier consumption patterns but also hints at improved tax administration and economic stability. Officials remain optimistic that the fiscal targets for 2025-26 will be achieved comfortably, especially as GST compliance continues to improve across states.
