New Delhi: India’s active COVID-19 cases have inched closer to the 4,000 mark, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). As of 8 a.m. on June 2, the country recorded 3,961 active cases, indicating a steady increase in recent days. The development comes as five more fatalities were reported on June 1, raising the nationwide COVID-19 death toll to 32 since January 2025.
India’s active COVID-19 cases saw a notable jump with 203 fresh infections recorded on Sunday. Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala each reported one death, reflecting a geographically dispersed pattern of resurgence. Health authorities remain cautious but have assured citizens of robust preparedness.
States Register Modest Spikes; Kerala, Delhi Among Top Contributors
Delhi continues to see a rise in infections, reporting 47 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the active caseload in the capital to 483. Kerala, however, remains a key concern, with 35 new cases and the state’s active numbers swelling to 1,435 — the highest among all regions.
Maharashtra reported 21 new infections, raising its active case count to 506. Meanwhile, West Bengal confirmed 44 new cases, pushing its current tally to 331 active infections.
Health experts have noted that although the numbers remain relatively low compared to previous waves, the trend underscores the need for vigilance, especially in states with high population density and mobility.

‘No Room for Complacency,’ Says MoS Health
Speaking to ANI on May 30, Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, emphasized that the Centre is “fully prepared” to manage any resurgence. “We have reviewed the infrastructure established during the earlier COVID-19 waves — from oxygen plants to ICU setups — and are reinforcing our systems,” said Jadhav.
India’s active COVID-19 cases may be rising gradually, but Jadhav assured that health systems across the nation are alert and capable of tackling any spike. Coordination with state health departments is ongoing, with both central and state units “closely monitoring” local developments.
Infrastructure on Standby, Vigilance High
Officials confirmed that medical supplies, including antiviral stocks, oxygen support systems, and ICU capacities, are under continuous review. “We’ve left no stone unturned in our preparations,” added Jadhav, pointing out that both allopathic and AYUSH systems are being synchronized to boost preventive care and public awareness.
As India’s active COVID-19 cases trend upward again, health authorities urge the public to maintain caution, particularly in public places and while travelling. While the vaccination drive continues, emphasis has shifted toward swift detection and isolation of new cases.
