National Security in Focus: Singh Vows Tough Stand Against Cross-Border Terrorism

New Delhi– At a high-profile event held in New Delhi on May 4, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered a strong message in response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, pledging that India would give a befitting reply to cross-border terrorism. His statement came in the backdrop of rising national outrage over the April 22 attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a gathering that included political leaders and defence officials, Singh said, “As the Defence Minister, it is my responsibility to work with the armed forces and ensure the protection of the country’s borders. And it is also my duty to give a befitting reply to those who cast an evil eye on our nation.” His remarks were met with loud approval from the audience, signaling strong public support for a tougher security stance.

The event took on greater significance given the context: intelligence reports have pointed to cross-border involvement, likely originating from Pakistan-based terror outfits. Singh did not name Pakistan directly but made clear that any threats to India’s sovereignty would be met with resolute action. The befitting reply to cross-border terrorism, he emphasized, is not just a policy position but a national imperative.

Singh also highlighted the leadership style of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a determined, risk-taking leader. “People know Prime Minister Modi very well—his commitment, his decisiveness, and his courage to take bold steps. Under his leadership, what the nation desires will be achieved,” Singh said.

The Defence Minister’s speech is being viewed as a strategic signal, both to India’s adversaries and to its domestic audience, that retaliatory measures remain on the table. India has previously executed surgical strikes and air operations in response to terror provocations, and Singh’s address appears to align with that posture.

By reaffirming the government’s focus on national security and military readiness, Singh echoed a message of strength and deterrence. His repeated reference to a befitting reply to cross-border terrorism underscores the administration’s policy of zero tolerance toward acts of aggression emanating from across the border.
