Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma have legally parted ways after a family court in Mumbai granted their divorce on Thursday. Advocate Nitin Kumar Gupta, representing Chahal, confirmed the court’s decision, stating that their joint petition for divorce was accepted, legally dissolving their marriage.

Chahal and Verma, who tied the knot in December 2020, separated in June 2022. On February 5, the couple jointly filed for divorce through mutual consent. The Bombay High Court intervened on Wednesday, directing the family court to expedite the decision by Thursday due to Chahal’s upcoming participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The cricketer, who will play for Punjab Kings, required a resolution before the tournament begins on March 22.

High Court Waives Mandatory Cooling-Off Period
Under the Hindu Marriage Act, a six-month cooling-off period is mandatory after filing for mutual consent divorce to allow couples time for reconciliation. Initially, the family court refused to waive this period, citing partial compliance with consent terms, which required Chahal to pay Rs 4.75 crore to Verma as alimony. The court noted that only Rs 2.37 crore had been paid at the time. Additionally, a marriage counselor’s report highlighted incomplete mediation efforts.

However, Chahal and Verma challenged this decision in the Bombay High Court, arguing that the conditions outlined in the consent terms were fulfilled. On Wednesday, the High Court ruled in their favor, stating that the final installment of the alimony was scheduled for payment only after the divorce decree. Consequently, the court granted their plea and directed the family court to finalize the divorce immediately.

With this ruling, Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma are no longer legally married. This marks the conclusion of their nearly four-year-long journey as a couple, allowing them to move forward in their respective careers and personal lives.
