New Delhi: The satellite internet revolution in India took a major leap forward after the Maharashtra government signed a Letter of Intent with Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited. With this agreement, Maharashtra became the first state in the country to partner with Elon Musk’s company for satellite-based internet services aimed at expanding digital access in rural and remote regions.
Under the partnership, Starlink will deploy satellite internet across government institutions, public infrastructure, and underserved districts such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Dharashiv, and Washim. The initiative is part of the state’s Digital Maharashtra mission, which aims to strengthen digital connectivity in areas with limited network access and provide high-speed internet where traditional methods fall short.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the move a landmark moment for the state and said it represents a new chapter in connecting people and services in the remotest parts of Maharashtra. He expressed confidence that this partnership would help bridge the digital divide and make essential services like telemedicine, online education, and e-governance accessible to all.
The collaboration marks a key milestone in the satellite internet revolution in India, where rural connectivity remains a significant challenge. Starlink, backed by SpaceX, operates a vast network of low-Earth orbit satellites capable of delivering fast and stable internet connections even in hard-to-reach terrains. Through this tie-up, the company aims to support India’s digital infrastructure goals and complement terrestrial networks that struggle to cover difficult geographies.

Starlink’s entry into India is expected to reshape the broadband landscape, where it will compete with Jio Satellite and Eutelsat OneWeb. The company is already setting up satellite gateway stations in major cities including Mumbai, Noida, Kolkata, Chandigarh, and Lucknow, as part of its nationwide rollout plan. A full commercial launch of its services in India is anticipated by early 2026.
Industry experts view this as the start of a transformative era in India’s internet ecosystem. The satellite internet revolution in India is poised to overcome long-standing challenges related to fiber rollout delays, network congestion, and accessibility barriers in remote regions. By bypassing traditional infrastructure limitations, satellite technology can provide uninterrupted internet to schools, health centers, and local communities.
However, for this revolution to reach its full potential, experts stress the need for regulatory clarity, affordable user devices, and strong data security measures. States are expected to closely follow Maharashtra’s example, potentially adopting similar models to enhance connectivity in their own rural zones.
Way Forward
The satellite internet revolution in India is not just a technological advancement but a step toward digital equity. To make it sustainable, governments and private players must work together to ensure affordability, seamless integration with public services, and localized training for digital literacy. If implemented effectively, this model could help India achieve its goal of universal digital access and transform the lives of millions living in connectivity-dark regions.
